Dreaming of a fast, simple, and stress-free wedding in Cairns? Maybe you are eloping, planning a last-minute ceremony, or just cannot wait to say “I do.” The good news? Yes, you can have a quick wedding—but there is one legal step you cannot skip!
The One-Month Rule
In Australia, you must submit a Notice of Intended Marriage (NOIM) form at least one calendar month before your wedding.
For example, if you want to get married on March 25, your NOIM must be lodged by February 25 at the latest.
You can fill out the NOIM located outside of the Cairns area if you are planning a destination wedding in Cairns, and I can help guide you through the process.
What You Will Need
To get legally married in Australia, you must:
• Not already be married
• Be at least 18 years old unless a court approves otherwise
• Understand what marriage means and agree to marry
• Use legally required wording during your ceremony
• Be married by an authorised celebrant like me
You will also need to provide proof of date and place of birth such as a passport or birth certificate, photo ID such as a driver’s licence or passport, and proof of divorce or a death certificate if previously married.
What Happens After the Wedding?
On the day, we will sign three marriage certificates, along with two witnesses. I will then submit your paperwork to Births, Deaths, and Marriages, and they will send you details on how to order your official marriage certificate.
